| Barrington Stage and Capital Rep join the Juneteenth Theatre Justice Project to co-produce a zoom reading of Polar Bears, Black Boys & Prairie Fringed Orchids by Vincent Terrell Durham Friday, June 19, 2020 & Monday, June 22, 2020 at 7:30pm Pittsfield, MA) - Barrington Stage Company will join with Capital Repertory Theatre of Albany, NY to produce free zoom readings of Vincent Terrell Durham's new play, Polar Bears, Black Boys & Prairie Fringed Orchids on Friday, June 19, 2020 and Monday, June 22 at 7:30pm ET as part of the Juneteenth Theatre Justice Project. Barrington Stage and Capital Rep join over 40 theatres across the country presenting simultaneous Juneteenth readings of Durham's play, which speaks to issues of gentrification, white fragility, and police violence against Black bodies with a blend of wit, pathos and humor. Presented under the auspices of the PlayGround Zoom Fest and in partnership with SAG-AFTRA, the Juneteenth Theatre Justice Project is a response to the civil uprising following the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and the countless others before them, as well as those who have since been murdered at the hands of white supremacy and police brutality. Barrington Stage, Capital Rep, and all participating theatres recognize the need for collective action: a commitment to speaking the truth and to dismantling systemic racism in our institutions. In Polar Bears, Black Boys & Prairie Fringed Orchids, a liberal white couple open the doors of their renovated Harlem brownstone to host a party for a Black Lives Matter activist, his gay white lover, a sistah named Shemeka and the mother of a slain 12 year-old black boy. A night of cocktails and conversation sparks emotional debates ranging from under-weight polar bears, Lana Turner, saving the planet, gentrification, racial identity and protecting the lives of Black boys. Vincent Terrell Durham is a scriptwriter, author and poet who first honed his storytelling skills as a stand-up comic in comedy clubs across the country. His plays include The Fertile River, Vol. 1, A Post Racial America, and Polar Bears, Black Boys & Prairie Fringed Orchids, among others. Polar Bears, Black Boys & Prairie Fringed Orchids was co-commissioned and developed by PlayGround and Planet Earth Arts and is a 2019 NNPN National Showcase of New Plays finalist. The production will feature Kent Burnham, West Dews, Adrian Kiser, Tracy Liz-Miller, Michael McCorry Rose, Bianca Stinney, Matthew Tenorio and Peterson Townsend, and will be directed by Tiffany Nichole Greene. The Juneteenth Theatre Justice Project was launched by Aldo Billingslea to center Black theatre artists and new voices, address systemic racism in the theatre industry, and help raise much-needed funds in support of Black Theatres around the country via a GoFundMe campaign. A donation of $10 to benefit the Fund for Black Theatre in the U.S. is suggested for the live stream presentation. Details regarding talkbacks after the performances will be announced at BarringtonStageCo.org/PolarBears. |
