Ha, that is definitely an interesting order of roles. I just tried to find video evidence of these performances on YouTube, but came up with nothing. However, there is a clip of him singing from a 1962 film called "Den kære familie." I'm linking it below. Such a different look! I can see that he was a versatile actor who certainly could have played those different roles with aplomb. But I see now that his Carl Magnus was a totally stylized fabrication for that film, and a look and attitude that he didn't carry thru to other roles. Makes me that much more appreciate of the style of "Smiles of a Summer Night."
In fact, I'm now watching Bergman's 1955 "Dreams" with "Smiles of a Summer Night's" Harriet Andersson (Petra), Gunnar Björnstrand (Fredrik), and Eva Dahlbeck (Desiree). It's delightful to see that these actors were trusted to really create a broad range of roles. I didn't even recognize Andersson as the same actor! It feels like you're watching a theater troupe versus famous and often typecast actors. I've been ignorant of this world of midcentury Swedish film. Excited to dig in a little more! |
