Exactly! You lose the joy of discovery.
I know many companies have developed those complicated algorithms that track your purchases (or even things you merely browsed) and offer you helpful suggestions based on that (“you bought Item X, so you may like Item Y, because other folks who bought X also bought Y!” This results in me getting suggestions to buy my husband’s books (“No, thanks, I got a garage full of author copies.”) or else books on militaria (spouse’s research), along with cast albums and theatre history books.
But the fun of just rummaging among bins or shelves is gone. And those discoveries are not likely to be generated by algorithms.
What really shocked me was learning some college libraries have shut their stacks. Students can only check out what they request. Damn, my best sources for my honors thesis and countless seminar papers came from looking at the books on related topics on the same shelf as ones I originally was tracking doen.
