It's hard for me to believe that Elaine Paige wasn't part of the conversation about this role in New York. I wonder if the back and forth about casting Grizabella was either because Lloyd Webber or Nunn really wanted Paige to come over and was comparing every potential Grizabella to the known quantity of Paige or if it could have been that they were dragging their feet with casting so that they could use the excuse that they just couldn't find a suitable American to open the show (the same as Mackintosh did later with MISS SAIGON) and that they had no choice, but to bring over Paige.
LuPone would have been an obvious choice, if she'd been interested in doing it, but I imagine that she was still wrapped up in EVITA at this time and I can't imagine them plucking their newly minted star out of that show to play Grizabella. |
