I work at home and one day a week as a children’s librarian. In both places, I have access to iPads, computers, the whole freaking internet.

I have Thomas Brothers maps in my car for all Southern California.

I’m not in NYC, so worrying about getting info a show’s lottery is pointless.

When I travel, I will have the internet when I get to my destination, be it hotel or family member. I can cope without it for the several hours of travel time. If I’m going to an unfamiliar place, I either print or load the local map on my iPad.

Since the era of smartphones, there has been exactly one time in my life when having one would have been handy: I blew out a tire on the I5 in the Central Valley. My daughter was with me, and was able to find a tire place in the next town with her phone. But if she hadn’t been there, I did have other options, like asking at the nearest gas station or calling a relative with internet access. My own phone would have been a bit faster, but I still would have gotten the information I needed.

I do have the resources of the internet available to me nearly all the time, at home and at work. The times (pre-COVID days) I am out shopping, at a ballgame, the museum, or the theatre, etc, I bloody well do not need it. I can wait until I’m home. If it were free, sure, I’d take it. But is the convenience worth hundreds of dollars a year? No. Not at all.

So I can shrug it off just fine, thanks very much, and hand those hundreds of dollars to my plumber for the ongoing disaster in my home.
