| At least, that is what she said in an episode of THE MERV GRIFFIN SHOW right about the time she was playing the role on Broadway. Beechman came onto Merv's show to sing "Memory" (he obviously really liked her as she made several appearances on his show). After the number, Merv talked to her briefly (without bringing her over for a sit down). Beechman says that, while playing in JOSEF she was asked by Lloyd Weber to audition for Grizabella in CATS, but that Trevor Nunn felt she had "too much youthful exuberance for the role". Actually, now that I think about it, I am not sure if she actually auditioned for the part or if Lloyd Weber just brought Nunn to see her in Josef. I wish I could rewatch the clip --I used to have it on tape but it was on BETA and my Betamax stopped working. Anyone out there have this episode of Merv's show? If so, PLEASE post it on Youtube; Laurie does an amazing "Memory" on the episode. |
