| You're lucky that you saw it in the Shubert. I didn't see it till December, after it had moved to the Majestic. Len Cariou later lamented that it had played much better in the Shubert. But I eventually learned that in addition to Prince wanting the greater seating capacity of the Majestic (but the move came just around the time it stopped playing to full capacity on a weekly basis), there was an ongoing problem with noise from New York Times trucks in Shubert Alley every night during the last part of the show. I guess most other shows that had recently played there weren't quite so long as Night Music. Some people have complained about "The Miller's Son" sounding too verbally virtuosic or articulate or educated for Petra, but I've never felt that way. But there's something so self-consciously comic and inherently false about some of the material for several other characters, most of all "You Must Meet My WIfe." Screw a simpler version of "I Feel Pretty." I wish Prince had asked him for a simpler version "You Must Meet My Wife." And i've written here before that I wish there were more singing for several characters in Act Two. I can really do without "It Would Have Been Wonderful," which I feel adds little to the show, skillfully written though it is. Anne, Henrik and Charlotte don't sing in Act Two. I feel that's a mistake. And effective as Madame Armfeldt's monologue about her first lover is, I rather wish Sondheim had made it into a song. A shortish song, possibly using the "Liaisons" music (which does underscores the monologue). Madame A doesn't need another five-minute song. I don't feel any of them need big songs in Act Two, but something. Of course, "Two Fairy Tales" was to have been in Act Two, but charming and lovely as that song is, I don't think it was right for Act Two. Yet there are parts of the show that I really love. |
