| Hey all, I've been going through old issues of THE SONDHEIM REVIEW and EVERYTHING SONDHEIM, and in the Spring 2010 issue of TSR, I came across an interview I did with Angela Lansbury the day before she began rehearsals for the Broadway revival of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC. As you might imagine, she said a lot of interesting things in the interview, but in re-reading it, there were two items that really stuck out for me. First, I asked her about SUNSET BLVD., saying I remembered that, before the Andrew Lloyd Webber show was created, there had been reports that Stephen Sondheim was going to musicalize the property with Lansbury starring. She replied: "Yes. We talked about that the other night, he and I, and we regretted that we hadn't done it. But it was not to be. Then I almost did it with Lloyd Webber -- he and i discussed it with Hal Prince -- but it all fell apart, and I went on to other things. I don't really know what happened." Later in the interview, I asked Lansbury, "Are there any Sondheim roles you didn't play that you would have liked to have a go at?" She replied: "There was some discussion of me playing the Alexis Smith role in FOLLIES, but I think at that point I was in England, and I was doing quite a lot of huge movies, so it couldn't be arranged. I don't think there's any role in any of the other Sondheim shows that would have been right for me. I'm not that easy to cast you know!" Just thought I would share these two "what might have been stories" again here. |
