Mandlebaum's book discussed 210 musicals that opened between 1950 -- 1990. It was pretty comprehensive. Most of the shows he discussed had some merit and his writing about them was quite interesting and informative.
Purdy's book discusses only 10 musicals. I saw 6 of them. IMO three of the six, Spider-Man, Lestat and Rocky had some merit, but the other three, The Pirate Queen, King Kong, and Dance of the Vampires were pretty bad, especially their scores. I had no interest in seeing the other four. |
