Actually they are making millions. The Flea's 2018 990 shows income over $2 million. They raised over $18 for their current faciltiy.

I do not think any off-off-Broadway company demands the hours of non-artistic labor that the Flea does.

Nor do most off-off-Broadway theaters have the level of funding that the Flea does.

It is a great opportunity, but why should that opportunity be limited to those with families can supplement their income?

The Flea has long had a checkered reputation. Linked is an old article that speaks to many of the issues, and its labor history (todays Bats have it easy compared to earlier iterations. And the company used to charge for auditioning):
