The petty gossipy attacks on Roth and Rothman take away from the valid points the author is trying to make. For Roth, it is that the response to the closures and pain of the pandemic is tone deaf at best. It's not surprising to find this push back when there have been numerous gushy articles about his fabulous homes and attention grabbing fashions. There is more than a little homophobia in these attacks, however.
As for the non-profits, they are and have been controlled by the same group of white men and women for 30 years. Todd Haimes, Andre Bishop, Lynn Meadow and Oscar Eustus. They pay lip service to diversity but haven't managed to attract a diverse audience. Go to Manhatten Theater Club or Roundabout and see the same white upper middle class audience they've had for decades! |
