Thanks, and, nope, I hadn't seen your follow-up post with the quotes, all good and clarifying.

I started this thread because it was meant to go broader, to other adaptations, but it hasn't provoked interest, so I added the "Smiles"/"Night Music" details here, since the thread was more recent so seemed more accessible.

And, perhaps more than you, I like both pieces a lot and don't have the kinds of reservations you do about "Night Music." To me, it's an elegant farce, and plotting often doesn't make any more sense in farces than in murder mysteries. I wouldn't want to choose between them, but -- as always, to me -- Bergman certainly is a better writer than Wheeler.
