Yes, that was indeed what happened. And it was shocking only to the extent that it proved how little integrity there is left in our current system - to the point that it seemed completely unbelievable to you (and to me when I first read about it). While the nature of the op-ed is off topic, I hope that the discussion around how that op-ed was allowed to be published is on topic, at least as it points back to the Elite Society of theater producers.

In a different part of this thread, you ask if this type of vitriolic reporting is the "new normal". I find myself torn over that question. On the one hand, I agree that I don't want to only see writing about the theater that is driven by personal anger and disgust. At the same time, the article is speaking from a deep place of truth about how rotten the producing culture has become, especially in regards to who earns a lot of money (those at the very top) versus who earns a little bit of money (everyone else, who are looking longingly at the person right above them who is earning more and wishing they had that). That unfortunately is the current "normal", and it's one that more and more artists and theater makers are saying they don't think they can continue to work within. And if the only way to communicate that to outside readers is to pour it into a vitriolic rant - I'm here for that, at least right now.

It's really interesting to see the reaction on this board, versus amongst my peers. This board has gravitated towards condemning the messenger and the method of his message, while folks I work alongside are reading it with mounting self-disgust about our complicity in propping up this broken system and toxic culture. The essay may not be the best written - though I find it less meandering than many here do - but everything he writes strikes me as true. And damning. It makes me want to get out of theater altogether, if this is the best we can do. Other cultures are equally toxic, maybe more so (to paraphrase Becket), but at least they pay better. Which, if we can't get respect or serve our values, at least we can put some funds in the retirement account.
