That Sound Of Music is rather picturesque, cast largely with opera singers in a time when the "crossover" style hadn't yet become routine.
Maggie Fitzgibbon sings her two numbers in the original keys, which at times pushes her outside her usual vocal territory, though she sounds
really good, even on the high line at the end of No Way To Stop It.
Interestingly, the Rolf, Peter Gilmore, was later to play the lead in the hit BBC television series The Onedin Line, a strictly dramatic role (though
he had sung in West End shows). And, amusingly, at the end of Do Re Mi, when Maria has to sing down to C below middle C, the children
shout out, "She can't make it!"--a stage direction in the vocal score, not an actual line of text. |
