| Several things to react to here. First, when I asked about proposals, I was referring to pilates quote mocking Paulus, and what I was interested in is whether you thought that this was a sensible approach. To me, if we want a different world, we have to give people the opportunity to learn. No doubt there are those speaking in PR platitudes, but there are also a LOT of people I have spoken to who sincerely want to come to terms with the racism as to which they have been in denial etc. If we don't want a learning process, what are we advocating. Is Diane Paulus being disingenuous (which, in essence, is what Grissom is saying)? I don't know. But I am willing to bet Grissom doesn't either. (And this is one aspect of the "undercutting." Second, on your proposals, sure. Third, you are focused (and it would seem for good reason) on the non-profit toxicity. I would expand that some, to include the unholy relationship between non-profits and commercial Broadway. You mention burning it down. I am not sure I'd sign on to that, but I think we need some revolutionary changes on the commercial side. A few weeks ago there was a dustup when it was discovered that the Nederlanders gave Trump money and a boycott of projects making them money was discussed. At the time, I said somewhere (maybe on here, maybe not) that I had the idea that their enterprise should be bought by Blacks of means. If we want BLM to be more than a slogan, then it makes sense that a chunk of our theatres be owned by those for whom Black lives really do matter. Revolutionary? Not so much. Finally, I hope you decide to stay and fight. Things are tough right now, in 100s of way. It hits everyone in different ways. |
