I think he is fair in his assessment of The Inheritance. It's an entertaining but facile update of the far more leveled Howard's End, filtered through our feelings of loss surrounding AIDS. Lopez didn't exactly push buttons so much as remind us of buttons that had been pushed by others.
Slave Play is a far more ambitious piece. I do not agree that Harris is specifically holding a mirror up to a white audience to make them uncomfortable. He holds that mirror up to all of us and asks us to acknowledge the complexity of the baggage we are carrying. In that regard, the play is post-politically correct, maybe even post-racial distinction. That alone is a major accomplishment in our society. |
