Your comparison is in grayscale, not black or white. Each of us likes and dislikes things differently but an intellectually-intended thesis has to rise above that whereas Grissom simply grades the plays on the basis of their alignment with the particular ambition of his thesis. This degrades (or at least obscures) his larger points.

I have one other concern about what he says about Slave Play, arising from what now seems like a problem with his "reporting." Did he really stand on the street and interview hundreds of people leaving Slave Play, taking notes on a pad so he could quote their anonymous words? Grissom's repeated reliance on this technique makes one wonder what process might be in operation here.
