It’s one of the most enjoyable theatre books ever written. Just don’t take it as absolute truth, because it’s not. Hart fudges, embellishes, and makes errors. But I think the one true thing that comes through, both in the book and the play, is that Hart was raised in overwhelming poverty, with a difficult family, and that theatre was his escape—in more ways than one.
