| Just thinking about the "Music Man" led me to think about other shows which feature attempted swindlers and liars. "The Producers" has Max Bialystock leading Leo Bloom astray and trying to cheat his little old lady investors. The recently done (pretty badly unfortunately, except for the ballet) "High Button Shoes" has Harrison Floy (the Phil Silvers-originated part) trying to scam families including one couple including original star Nanette Fabray in a real estate ploy. "The Most Happy Fella", yes, even that, has otherwise lovable Tony lying about his looks by sending a picture of his handsome foreman Joe in his stead to try to lure his crush Rosabella to be his mail-order bride. I think the flop "Kelly" had a scam about making money off of guy who is going to jump off a bridge. The current "Dear Evan Hansen" is all about a scam involving ever-growing lies to bring glory to the eponymous character while hurting people emotionally in the process. There must be others. Feel free to add on. |
