Applegate in "Damn Yankees" tries to swindle Joe Hardy out of his soul; ironically, after Young Joe is turned back to Old Joe on the baseball field, Applegate calls Hardy a swindler for upsetting his nefarious plans of building up the Washington Senators and then having them lose.

Laurey is the real villain of "Oklahoma!", who by trying to manipulate and make Curley jealous, she ends up going out with and humiliating Jud, who ends up dead by the end of the show. Curley also makes fun of, at first (and then kills) Jud. I don't see these manipulative people, Curley and Laurey as having a happy marriage.

Rose in "Gypsy" kind of cons herself into thinking she can get satisfaction from living off the theatrical careers of her children.
