In the original libretto of Oklahoma!, Curly does not kill Jud. Jud attacks Curly, and in the scuffle Jud falls on his knife: CURLY: Look -- Look at him! Fell on his own knife.
Have you been drinking the 'Fish' Kool-Aid?
I thought the recent revival was an interesting alternate take on the basic story, probably closer to Green Grow the Lilacs than R & H intended. It had flaws (that were well discussed on ATC), but (for me) the pluses outweighed the minuses. Nevertheless, the claim that "not a word had been changed" was a bald faced lie, and I found it sad that so many prominent theatre professionals kept repeating it. |
