It’s been 19 years since I lived in DC. Signature was still producing in the former auto-repair place when I left. In the intervening time, Signature has become one of the top theatre companies in Metro DC (its home has always been in Virginia - and not in transit-friendly locations). For a while, it was mostly Schaeffer leading the charge, but over time the company has hired good people and produced memorable theatre in the fine building where its donors eventually helped them land. I read recently that Signature has the resources to continue to pay staff during the present period. I’m glad for that. It angers and saddens me to learn of Mr. Schaffer’s feet of clay, but I suspect that Signature will move forward quite well without him.
