I think the difference in the announcements about the shows was noted in the news story on Broadway World which had a statement from the producers: "It is the intent to open these plays-both powerful, funny and relevant dissections of Americana-in the spring of 2021, on the exact dates they were scheduled to open in 2020. However, we will only do so knowing that there are safeguards in place that will encourage audiences to return to the theatre, and that our government will allow us to have gatherings of more than 500 people. We, the producing team, believe that a vaccine is essential as part of that process, and we are hopeful that progress will be made in that area to ensure that artists and theatregoers will return to support this vital element of our theatrical heritage: the American play."
So those plays may not open unless there are strictures in place that "guarantee" (or as good as a "guarantee" can be with a virus) the safety of the audience. No vaccine, no open...which is different from LCT or "The Music Man". What has happened in Texas and Florida with the hasty reopenings of the state should be a lesson. My takeaway is that "The Minutes" and "American Buffalo" will come back-- and the announcement helps to give a boost to all of us who love Broadway and want it to return. I personally think that a vaccine may not happen until the summer of 2021 and if that's the case then those productions will not happen until after Labor Day 2021. I will try to see both plays-- and "The Music Man" and "Flying Over Sunset"-- but I appreciate the concerns of the producers of "American Buffalo" and "The Minutes".
