Have to agree with the author. IMO, 90% of what's great about this piece can be discerned and appreciated from the book/score which has been available for years. I found the production in person a bit of a let-down, possibly in part because many of the replacements weren't up to par with the original cast (or at least their performances in a studio).
Of COURSE there are elements of the production you can't "get" just from a cast recording. But I agree in this case that those are only modestly incremental.
