I’m of two minds. The original cast will likely never be matched, and they created an electricity onstage that surpassed anything you could get by listening to the album. When I saw the show a second time I was disappointed. James Monroe Iglehart, for example, couldn’t even get the words across intelligibly. Anyone who didn’t know the lyrics would have understood nothing. So the show is not worth it from that perspective, in my opinion.
But anyone who believes the show offers nothing beyond the album would miss that jaw-dropping staging of “Satisfied” where tine rewinds and we see the meeting between Hamilton and Angelica from her perspective. One of the most thrilling scenes on Broadway in years, and you have to be in the room where it happens. |
