Oliver Chris was great, I agree. I think audiences are having a lot of fun watching his sexy clowning. But the real revelation for me was Hammed Animashaun's Bottom (who really is a bottom in the production). Animashaun's Bottom was a take on the role that I hadn't seen before, both his physical presence and his vulnerability.

Director Hytner is a tremendous entertainer of audiences. He's also very smart, after choosing an interpretation he follows through, doesn't let it slack and is exacting in its details. But I found the second half a disappointment after the deliriously enjoyable first.

I'm going to have to add Circus elements to Puppetry on stage as much harder to do well than creatives think they are. It's not so much that they are hard to do well (which they are) as that they're hard to integrate well, so that the showy techniques blend into the overall staging. I'll add Immersive Theater to that list of hard to do well. But I think Hytner succeeded with his take on Immersive Theater. The choices were crowd pleasers but they were satisfyingly connected to his interpretation of the play.

All the hand holding and closeness of the audience and actors has a bitter-sweet nostalgic feeling to it when watched in the days of Covid.
