| And it's not without its notable irony that for this Tony, it was given to unnecessary and distracting choreography *by a white person* done in the style of "hip hop meets broadway movement" for a show literally about actual white people in history who owned slaves played by POC, instead of given to the brilliant and dramatically necessary choreography (and a ton of it) done *by a black person* and steeped in history and research and artistic craft especially in the dance styles of black performers, for a show literally about actual black people in history fighting for their equal rights on stage fighting to be seen and respected in a white theater world, played by black people. I'm not saying Andy isn't an amazing and brilliant choreographer... but... To me even if you take away the symbolism or optics of the award competitors that year, it wasn't even a competition - the choreo/staging in Shuffle Along was hands down more impressive an achievement on all levels than the choreo/staging in Hamilton, and I'm sad that the Hamilton sweep swept up this award too. For the record I think I'd have given Best Director to Wolfe, not Kail (this was a stiff year with incredibly impressive directing work from Wolfe, Kail, Arden and Doyle... any of them could have won this year or any other for their shows that year, and lovely work from Ellis but it wasn't gonna compete with the others that year). AND possibly Best Book to Wolfe and not Miranda (who of course deserved and would without question win Best Score for his sung-through show, and sung-through shows rarely win Best Book... funny that Wolfe also lost Best Book for another brilliant jukebox musical, losing to the sung-through Falsettos which also won Best Score that year)... and not because Miranda's book work on Hamilton isn't amazing. I also would have given Best Supporting Actor to Brandon Victor Dixon instead of Daveed Diggs, without question, AND Best Supporting Actress to Adrienne Warren instead of the also wonderful Renee Elise Goldsberry. And I also would not have given Hamilton Best Costume Design either! Very simple, straight forward costumes without much variety - expertly executed but not worthy of taking that Tony compared to Shuffle Along. I also would have given Best Lighting Design to American Psycho not Hamilton. So in Chazwaza's world of deserving Tonys, Hamilton is stripped of 5 or 6 of its 11 Tony wins. And not because every element of the show wasn't excellent (my big issues with the choreo aside), but because in that year of competition I just do not think those six wins were deserved against the competition it had. |
