Revisiting the 'Morning Glow' of marriage equality

Time flies. Yesterday was the 5th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's historic Obergefell ruling, paving the way for gay marriage in all 50 states. Only a few days after that decision, award-winning out singer-songwriter Tom Andersen celebrated that moment by posting a beautiful music salute to LGBT couples. He took ''Morning Glow'' from ''Pippin'' and transformed it into an anthem to marriage equality.

One lyric seemed especially apt: ''Winds of change are set to blow and sweep this whole land through. Morning glow is long past due.''

Stephen Schwartz, who wrote that classic showtune, said: ''I loved Tom's video and the way he sang 'Morning Glow.' '' Happy Pride!

Instantly remembered the "Fun Home" curtain call footage.

When I read of the fifth anniversary, I flashed on the stirring footage of Beth Malone leading the Fun Home company around the Circle in the Square stage that night, holding the rainbow flag. The combination of the historic event and the haunting show defined a potent moment. One that seems so unlike these times, when not dissimilar rights are being fought for (SCOTUS, recent) and NYC theater is dark.

Celebration, even through the prism of the difficult present, buoys and strengthens us.
