| SOO well said. Mr. Glover's an actual academic on the history of tap, and all that scholarship shone through. It was positively terrific thing to see. I wasn't over the moon with the book for SHUFFLE ALONG; the eventual confrontation with Brooks Ashmanskas's character -- while surely necessary -- tipped a bit too far into polemics for my taste. That said, I'm not sure that a more metaphorical or symbolic exploration of Broadway's racist history would have felt satisfying. Sometimes you just gotta tell it like it was. But I'm good with HAMILTON getting the Tony for best book. I'm still somewhat amazed at LMM's ability to create scenelets with conflict, setup, and payoff in three lyric stanzas. He could have so easily gotten caught up in his rhyme skills that he disregarded things like character and stakes, and yet, he consistently used them to build satisfying plot points, complications and reversals... and I hand him a lot of credit for that. The way he introduces George Washington -- easily the most famous name in the whole show -- by raising the stakes for all the characters we already care about? Brilliant, and that alone is noteworthy. I'm also cool with Renée Elise Goldsberry winning. Although Adrienne Warren made a TERRIFIC impression on me, and I knew we'd see a lot more of her soon, Anjelica got in my soul thanks to Ms. Goldsberry, and that just doesn't happen very often. My god, I was rooting SO HARD for her, and that's a rare gift in the theater. I don't have much to say about the other categories... but your points about SHUFFLE ALONG need to be heard as loudly as possible. I hate to think that an Audra McDonald pregnancy was to blame for it closing too soon, but the show was unbelievably good enough that it should have played longer. - GMB |
