I believe all of the stories take place within a 30 minute time period in one evening. So the girl in the field sets up that she is there to see the northern lights. I believe that just happens at the same point in several of the stories being told and the actors are basically pausing to look up at the northern lights when it happens and then continue with the dialog.

So I don't think it is a magic realism--but an actual event that draws their attention to the sky almost linking the different stories to one particular point in time.

As for the reading, it is one of the few that worked because it is basically only two characters interacting most of the time. It was worth watching.
