According to the linked NY Times article, the filmed version is edited from two live performances captured with nine stationary cameras. These were a Sunday matinee and a Tuesday evening performance, and between those two shows the cast performed individual numbers with filming equipment onstage.
I've just finished watching it now, and it's a marvel. How wonderful to have a beautifully captured document of such an important and significant artwork.
