| I am currently enjoying the 1975 London cast recording of "Jack The Ripper" (Pember/De Marne) which had to wait until 2015 for a release. No reason for not releasing at the time is given, I guess economics. Sometimes the wait can be very rewarding - the above and Dance a Little Close for example or not so much - 1969 London Anything Goes with Marian Montgomery. Are there many other cast recording gathering dust in vaults somewhere? I am thinking of cast recordings of staged musicals done at the time of the production rather than studio led creations. | |

| I used to have faith that everything that needed to be recorded would eventually have the muscle and finance put behind it to be preserved. The lack of Broadway recordings from Shuffle Along and After Midnight in recent years has shaken that faith. Of course maybe my view of the theatre world is just no longer in sync with the people who have said muscle and finance. |

| There was a cast recording of the 1973 Cryer-Ford musical Shelter that was never issued. The 1947 Comden-Green-Saul Chaplin musical Bonanza Bound received a cast recording made by RCA before it opened in Philadelphia. It may have been made while the show was still in New York rehearsals, although an orchestra is heard. This was done in anticipation of the upcoming Petrillo ban. Only nine songs were recorded, far from the whole score, but this was fairly common at the time. Look, Ma, I'm Dancin'! was also recorded prior to its out-of-town opening for the same reason, but since that one made it to Broadway, it was issued. Bonanza Bound was not. A number of Off-Broadway musicals were privately recorded. These were studio recordings. Equity agreed that such recordings could happen as long as distribution was limited to members of cast, the writers and the production team, or at least that's what Sheldon Harnick said when discussing the recording of Smiling the Boy Fell Dead. Eventually a number of those, including Smiling the Boy Fell Dead, were issued on small labels, sometimes without permission. Among those were Kittiwake Island, The Sap of Life and Sing, Muse. Two others, The Crystal Heart and Love and Let Love, may have been recorded pre-opening by the labels that had bought the rights but then chose not to issue them. |

| All I know for that show, apart from the Capriccio issue of the London concert, were the demo recordings by Weill and Ira Gershwin, not intended for issue but issued on LP (and later on CD) decades later. If the original cast recorded some numbers, I haven't heard about it. | |

| Ben Bagley on Kurt Weill Revisited, Vols I and II recorded extensive excerpts before the Capriccio recording. John Reardon and Jo Sullivan sang both of the love duets, the whole cast sang the opening. No where near as effective as the authentic recording but it gave all of us a taste of what we would later hear. | |

| He is, particularly in 'My Crazy Heart'. Nobody is ever going to demand a Tamsin Greig Sings Gershwin album, but she does very well despite not really being a singer. The new finale is lovely. It's a good recording - I have it too (tracking it down took about an hour on the phone) - and it deserves a wider release. |

| It was a while ago, and I don't have any record of the numbers I called, but I got it via ATG. An easier way would be to try MTI - they manage the performance rights, and the London cast album is the reference recording. You can hear it on the show's page on their website. |

| There are 5 that I'm aware of: Jumbo -- the 1935 OBC performances taken from a radio broadcast; the 1981 cast recordings of Naughty Marietta and Rose Marie that (I believe) were from concert productions; Paul Simon's The Capeman; and Thunder Knocking on the Door, an off-Broadway musical with Leslie Uggams. | |

| I wouldn't count Jumbo as that was not recorded to be issued as a cast recording. IIRC, AEI announced that it would be issuing those broadcasts on CD, 50 or 60 (or more) years after they were heard on radio, but never did. The Smithsonian Naughty Marietta, a cast recording of a Smithsonian concert, was issued on LP by Smithsonian. I believe it was announced that Harbinger would be reissuing it on CD but I think that hasn't happened. The Smithsonian Rose-Marie, also a cast recording of a concert, was never issued by Smithsonian. |

| Compared to the terrific billy Elliot written for the stage and the very good Aida. And then there are those lion king songs from the movie brought to the stage. I saw Lestat twice (San Fran and ny) and it is forgettable score. I think the was too busy with his Vegas concerts to do a proper edit job during previews. |

| I know from your first posting on this subject that you have little regard for the score and you no doubt intended this one as well to be negative. But your rephrasing of the subject line immediately reminds one of O'Neill and specifically his supreme masterpiece which he did want suppressed. LESTAT certainly isn't a masterpiece. But I think it certainly holds its own with the scores of BILLY, the least memorable aspect of that show, as well as AIDA. If for no other reason than Carolee Carmello, I would very much like to hear the OCR of LESTAT. |

| ''Lestat'' features at least two terrific tunes: ''Right Before My Eyes'' and ''Sail Me Away,'' both beautifully sung by Hugh Panaro. (I'm also a big fan of Elton's Tony-winning score to ''Aida,'' but there are no tunes that I'd want to hear again from ''Billy Elliot.'') |

| I agree. I think Billy Elliot is his best score, a true theatre score where the songs tell the story and illuminate the characters. Songs like "Solidarity", "Electricity", "The Stars Look Down", "Expressing Yourself", "Born to Boogie" are beautifully composed and written. I love Aida's score as well -- my favorite song is "The Gods Love Nubia", but others like "My Strongest Suit", "A Step too Far", and "Written in the Stars" are incredibly catchy and in the best tradition of John's pop-flavored compositions. |

| Taste is so subjective. I caught ''Billy Elliot'' 3 times, to see all the original Billys, and the songs just never made any impression on me. On the other hand, my favorite tunes from ''Aida'' are ''My Strongest Suit,'' ''Elaborate Lives'' and the heartbreaking ''I Know the Truth.'' |

| I agree with you that taste is very subjective. My partner and I agree much of the time about the shows we see, but not all of the time. During a recent trip to New York together, on one particular day (out of 9), he stood in a rush line for Tootsie and I did the on-line rush for The Great Society, but afterward we did go out together for a bite to eat. I do like all the songs from Aida that you list as your favorites. |

| *Almost* ditto what Wayman said... my personal favorite songs from AIDA are "Elaborate Lives" and "I Know the Truth." I would also add "Written in the Stars" depending on my mood.... :-) (I've also seen BILLY several times, and the songs are great and make me weep at the time, but I have never felt the need to buy the cast recording.) |

| I agree with your assessment of the 2 shows and their scores. Aida is a lot more fun, although the show itself has a lot of tragedy in it. The writers wisely included a framing device that kind of gives the story a happier, more hopeful ending. John's songs are immensely entertaining in the show, but also are very enjoyable as a listening experience on disc. The Elliot score is very book specific -- it's an incredibly powerful, emotion packed story. However, the listening experience on disc is not as much fun as listening to Aida. Nevertheless, as a hopeless theatre geek, the Elliot recording does bring back happy memories to me of the show and that's why I bought it. I don't listen to it as often as I listen to both the concept and OBC recordings of Aida. |

| Wow, Wayman, I was beginning to think that I was the only one who enjoyed anything from LESTAT! I saw it in San Francisco, and enjoyed it so much that I went back to see it two more times! The two songs that stayed with me are the two that you mentioned -- but I will admit to being a huge fan of both Elton John and Hugh Panaro. By the way, I also LOVE Aida, but don't care for BILLY ELLIOT. | |

| You're not alone. I enjoyed the Lestat score too, although the show itself didn't quite work. Has there ever been a commercially successful vampire musical? Anyway, I was disappointed there was no cast album. I definitely would have bought it (and still would today if Elton John ever softens his heart about a recording). Although it's a long shot, a studio cast recording would probably be more likely -- that is what was done with the other vampire musical I enjoyed seeing, i.e., Dracula. Another fine Wildhorn score. I did like Billy Elliot, though. It made me cry. I saw it twice on Broadway, the sanitized tour in Chicago, and 2 local productions with all the f-words gloriously restored. |

| [ Has there ever been a commercially successful vampire musical? ] Yes indeed. While the Broadway version of "Tanz der Vampire"--under the title "Dance of the Vampires"--was a disaster, "Tanz der Vampire" has elsewhere become something of a classic. Since its world premiere in Vienna in 1997, it has returned again and again to great success in Austria, Germany, Japan, Russia, Hungary, etc. |

| A digital release would eliminate the expense of the jewel case, the CD pressing, and the booklet so the total cost would have to be less. How much less I don't know. However, I believe Lestat was recorded either during the show's run or shortly afterward so wouldn't the union regulations (to protect the actors' and musicians' appropriate compensation) still apply if there is an eventual release? In the past shows that were a quick failure waited a certain period of time before recording to bypass the union requirements with, of course, the participants' acquiescence. That was the case with Amour, Triumph of Love, Cry-Baby, undoubtedly others. Aren't the union rules the main factor in a recording's total cost? |

| We're out of my area of expertise, but I would presume that union payments would have been incurred at the time of recording, rather than upon release. | |

| On cd or digital. I believe it was recorded. I doubt he does. | |
