''Lestat'' features at least two terrific tunes: ''Right Before My Eyes'' and ''Sail Me Away,'' both beautifully sung by Hugh Panaro.

(I'm also a big fan of Elton's Tony-winning score to ''Aida,'' but there are no tunes that I'd want to hear again from ''Billy Elliot.'')

I think the score beautifully integrated into the story. No song stops the show. The songs evoke emotion for a show more than solo numbers to be sung in concert.

BILLY ELLIOT and AIDA -- the Scores

I agree. I think Billy Elliot is his best score, a true theatre score where the songs tell the story and illuminate the characters. Songs like "Solidarity", "Electricity", "The Stars Look Down", "Expressing Yourself", "Born to Boogie" are beautifully composed and written.

I love Aida's score as well -- my favorite song is "The Gods Love Nubia", but others like "My Strongest Suit", "A Step too Far", and "Written in the Stars" are incredibly catchy and in the best tradition of John's pop-flavored compositions.

Taste is so subjective. I caught ''Billy Elliot'' 3 times, to see all the original Billys, and the songs just never made any impression on me.

On the other hand, my favorite tunes from ''Aida'' are ''My Strongest Suit,'' ''Elaborate Lives'' and the heartbreaking ''I Know the Truth.''

I agree with you that taste is very subjective. My partner and I agree much of the time about the shows we see, but not all of the time. During a recent trip to New York together, on one particular day (out of 9), he stood in a rush line for Tootsie and I did the on-line rush for The Great Society, but afterward we did go out together for a bite to eat.

I do like all the songs from Aida that you list as your favorites.

*Almost* ditto what Wayman said... my personal favorite songs from AIDA are "Elaborate Lives" and "I Know the Truth." I would also add "Written in the Stars" depending on my mood.... :-)

(I've also seen BILLY several times, and the songs are great and make me weep at the time, but I have never felt the need to buy the cast recording.)

I agree with your assessment of the 2 shows and their scores. Aida is a lot more fun, although the show itself has a lot of tragedy in it. The writers wisely included a framing device that kind of gives the story a happier, more hopeful ending. John's songs are immensely entertaining in the show, but also are very enjoyable as a listening experience on disc.

The Elliot score is very book specific -- it's an incredibly powerful, emotion packed story. However, the listening experience on disc is not as much fun as listening to Aida. Nevertheless, as a hopeless theatre geek, the Elliot recording does bring back happy memories to me of the show and that's why I bought it. I don't listen to it as often as I listen to both the concept and OBC recordings of Aida.

Wow, Wayman, I was beginning to think that I was the only one who enjoyed anything from LESTAT! I saw it in San Francisco, and enjoyed it so much that I went back to see it two more times! The two songs that stayed with me are the two that you mentioned -- but I will admit to being a huge fan of both Elton John and Hugh Panaro. By the way, I also LOVE Aida, but don't care for BILLY ELLIOT.

You're not alone. I enjoyed the Lestat score too, although the show itself didn't quite work. Has there ever been a commercially successful vampire musical? Anyway, I was disappointed there was no cast album. I definitely would have bought it (and still would today if Elton John ever softens his heart about a recording). Although it's a long shot, a studio cast recording would probably be more likely -- that is what was done with the other vampire musical I enjoyed seeing, i.e., Dracula. Another fine Wildhorn score.

I did like Billy Elliot, though. It made me cry. I saw it twice on Broadway, the sanitized tour in Chicago, and 2 local productions with all the f-words gloriously restored.

[ Has there ever been a commercially successful vampire musical? ]

Yes indeed. While the Broadway version of "Tanz der Vampire"--under the title "Dance of the Vampires"--was a disaster, "Tanz der Vampire" has elsewhere become something of a classic. Since its world premiere in Vienna in 1997, it has returned again and again to great success in Austria, Germany, Japan, Russia, Hungary, etc.

''Sail Me Away'' has such a soaring melody and Hugh's rich voice only sends it sailing into the rafters.
