| Miguel Cervantes was simply extraordinary as Hamilton, Javier Munoz was also an improvement. Tho. To be fair. There was something quite special about a musical that keeps saying "You have no control/Who lives, who dies, who tells your story" and having the literal storyteller being center stage. Denee Benton and Solea Pfieffer are the only Eliza's that didn't disappear when Anjelica was also on stage. Phillipa was lovely but seemed to fade unless she was center stage and I think it weakens the overall impact of the show. Having a stronger Eliza really resets the balance of the show in an important way. Every King I've seen has been superior to Jonathan Groff. Brian D'arcy James, Rory O'Malley, and Alexander Gemignai especially. Jonathan Groff didn't really disappoint but it's a really obvious performance. James Madison/Hercules Mulligan isn't terribly pivotal but Wallace Smith made the part significant in a way I haven't seen anyone else do. I preferred Karen Olivo's more motherly, soulful take... but I wouldn't say it was better necessarily. Lastly. Joshua Henry gave probably the single best performance I've ever seen in a musical. The level of charisma could be felt five blocks away. Leslie Odom Jr.'s performance felt very effortful and labored in a way that Joshua Henry's didn't. And just generally Leslie Odom Jr felt somewhat one note. So much so that when he's running for office after his character has pivoted, it feels a little silly. Played as comic business. The arch of Joshua Henry's Burr was crystal clear and heartbreaking. Daniel Breaker brings a crafty mischief to the proceedings that adds to the character in a way I didn't expect. I think they're both leagues better than Leslie Odom Jr but that said... his performance is still pretty outstanding and hard to top. |
