| Anyone else discovering (or rediscovering) ''Encore!'' on Disney Plus? Kristen Bell hosts (and produces) this hourlong series of 12 episodes, each devoted to a different musical. Alumni, many now in their 30s and 40s, go back to their high schools, often re-creating the roles they played back then. They're led by a trio of theater professionals and given less than a week to remount the show. (Marcia Milgrom Dodge, who was Tony-nominated for directing the 2009 Broadway revival of ''Ragtime,'' helps former students in Santa Monica, Calif., restage their 2008 ''Ragtime.'') Along the way, the former classmates rediscover their joy of performing (and the jitters). And they also poignantly reflect on their high school days, of friendships formed and fractured (and sometimes reunited), and reveal where life has led them, and the roads they did (or didn't) take. It all leads up to the big night. Will everyone remember their lines and lyrics, especially before a soldout audience packed with their family and friends? (The reaction shots of astonished kids watching their mothers and fathers singing and dancing are adorable.) An especially memorable ''Encore!'' features a Georgia high school remounting of ''Oklahoma!'' from 1991. Back then, teenaged Woody was a terrific dancer who was cast as Will Parker. Due to a hit-and-run accident, Woody now uses a wheelchair. To give him a boost, the show sends Woody to NYC to visit Ali Stroker in ''Oklahoma!'' for advice. It was inspiring to see Woody play Will again, ready to roll and wheel around the stage in such good cheer. ''Encore!'' will bring back memories for everyone who was in a high school musical (and make you wonder which one you'd revive). |
