| I'm among the handful who did see them all, only because -- as I've shared on this board before -- I saw the show try out in DC my senior year of high school. (Front of 2nd balcony, $3.00; seriously). I remember many things about the show, and forget others. Alan and I have discussed this here several times (intermission in vs intermission out; I still forget, but believe Alan explained to me that it went in and stayed a few months into the B'way run). I remember most of all: DaSilva (scene-stealer, of course) the hard-working Daniels (a great performance), and the red-wigged, strapping Howard. I had seen him play Jill O'Hara's brother in that same theater months earlier (people forget he was in Promises, Promises). Quite a year for try-outs in DC. We also got Play it Again, Sam, if memory serves. Buckley took the roof off, and was also simply gorgeous to boot. I remember thinking there was too much of the epistolary relationship of John and Abigail (I was 17; I've changed my mind since). And even knowing very little about the structure of musicals, sense there were long stretches without a song. I was a smart-ass and thought a new song or two would be added. Alan will correct me, but I believe the show was frozen in DC, or close to it. |
