In speaking with a tech-intense friend who was having audibility issues that seemed as preposterous to me as the OP's, he puzzled out that weak bandwidth was likely resulting in a downgrade of the audio. If you have a weak Internet connection for whatever reason (and if you were trying to watch Hamilton during a busy time on cable, that could be the culprit), it could be you were getting murky sound because of that.
