Hamilton not-quite-original film cast
Posted by: ablankpage 10:35 am EDT 07/05/20

I noticed as I was watching this morning that it's *almost* the complete original cast, but Betsy Struxness and Emmy Raver-Lampman had already left the company by the time of filming (replaced by Hope Easterbrook and Elizabeth Judd). Any idea why they left? Or why they didn't come back for a few performances, like Jonathan Groff did? Betsy was an especially dynamic member of the ensemble, it's too bad her performance wasn't preserved on film.

Betsy wrote a post about why she left (but didn't say if she was or was not invited back for filming) in her webpage. Since not all OBC were in the film, Disney calls it Original Broadway Production.

Thanks for sharing.. that's a great blog piece. I was really happy to be part of a master class she did for students of ours and she said pretty much the same thing. And I was SO lucky to have seen her in the show. Fierce is not to weak a word.

Apparently she wasn’t invited.

That blogger writes, "But because she left after 6 months and opted out of the remainder of her contract, in legal terms, does this mean she isn’t considered officially as part of the original cast?"

This has to rank high on any list of silly theatre questions of the last 100 years. :)

It may be right that she was not invited but inviting her would have involved asking for and obtaining the relinquishment of the role from another actor. On her website, Betsy explains why she left the show when she did and says she does not regret her decision. Her gripe here is the OBC labeling which, it seems, has been rectified by the use of "Original Broadway Production."

True, but they did that to get Jonathan Groff in the recording.

As someone who never saw the Original Cast, I was aware of the absence of Struxness while watching the film. Her performance was such a part of the legend that built around the show in that first year, and I wish it had been preserved.

They did get Groff, which means that O'Malley agreed to it (maybe in his original contract). I don't know any of the backstory but she said on her website that, among other things, she had become "angry." Whatever had become the situation, perhaps she burned a bridge on the way out. (Again, I don't know.) What I do know is that you couldn't take your eyes off of her dancing and she was indeed a part of the signature of the show. There is good b-roll footage of her that can, at least, let you see what the big deal was. And as I said, her gripe about the OBC label was totally legit.

Yeah, reading between the lines it seems like it was perhaps not an amicable departure on one side or both.

Still curious about Emmy Raver-Lampman. She originated (seemingly) her same track in the tour a few months later, but I doubt it would have started rehearsals at the time of the filming. So I'm unclear why she wouldn't have fulfilled her year contract.

My memory of her departure was that it was related to the negotiations over getting more pay for the actors who had been part of the original workshops, and that she had a negative reaction to some part of that process. Somehow, I gleaned this from social media in 2016. Curious if others have the same memory.

That could be; I have no memory. Her website discussion of her departure is pretty clear and explicit and does not say that.

I am sorry we didn't get to see Brian d'Arcy James as King George III. Jonathan Groff was good but James was great.

He wasn't even playing King George at the time though. Rory O'Malley was.

Rory mentioned he took a night off for Jonathan to take the throne but his performance will be in the DVD. I wonder if Javier's performance will be captured? He never mentioned in his tweet so my guess is no.

That's correct. But at least his performance was filmed so Disney can put it on the DVD, and I'm sure if they want to load up the extra tracks to sell the DVD, so I bet they will. And KGIII scenes are less than 10 mins compared to Javi's A.Ham's portion so it's not hard to do.

And, as far as I know, there’s no recording of him singing “You’ll Be Back.”
