Many years ago a few thousand of us were lucky to see and hear one of those "star in the making" performances of Anne Hathaway as Lili opposite Brian Stokes Mitchell in the Encores Carnival. When she started singing "Mira" we all knew we were witnessing the very special debut of a musical theatre star. I believe she was a freshman at Vassar at the time. I wish they had recorded it. Also amazing were Debbie Gravitte and Doug Sills. Their Act II showstopper, the reprise of "It Was Always You" with Debbie in the sword box for Doug the magician seemed to go wrong in terms of the sword props, and it took them several hilarious minutes of falling down laughter to collect themselves and go on with the show. We couldn't have loved it more. Sorry that Anne has had such a career in film that Broadway could probably never seem to lure her back. She is a stellar on-stage performer. BTW, she and her husband and family have lived in Ojai, CA (my location now) for a while now.
