Shows that close in one night fascinate me, so I decided to look up ''Billy,'' which had a score by Ron Dante and Gene Allan.
It was a 1969 musical suggested by Herman Melville's ''Billy Budd,'' so I assume Ming Cho Lee's set must've quite a ship.
Lee did get a Tony nomination for his set, but he lost to Jo Mielziner's scenic design for ''Child's Play.''
Notably, ''Billy'' wasn't Lee's only one-night flop. Others included: ''The Moon Besieged,'' ''Here's Where I Belong,'' ''La Strada'' and ''Gandhi.''
However, Lee did win the 1983 Tony for his massive mountain set for ''K2,'' which even beat John Napier's gigantic junkyard for ''Cats.'' |
