| I deeply regret that this is not what happened, and the opposite tack of banning the word was taken. As a result of that, the word has not been completely returned to being a slur rather than an honorific. Nice work, folks. Well then, I guess you should be glad that no one else seems to have a problem with "show queens," so that we can continue to promote the silly and stupid stereotype that men in theatre must be gay and therefore have effeminate qualities. Nice work, biotches...:-) "Gay men have largely achieved equitable treatment in the Western World." Everything is relative, but seriously, that statement is borderline ridiculous, especially if you're taking account anything that happened before the present era. I think the answer really lies in the middle somewhere. The gay community is certainly better off in many ways than it was in previous eras. (I attended my first gay pride parade/rally back in 1982 in Hartford, having just graduates high school, having started to come out the summer before. Back then, it felt like a daring and emotionally/socially dangerous thing. These days, Pride MONTH - not just a weekend - is a huge deal.) No matter what the current regime tries to do to us. BUT - taking the full acronym now - LGBTQAI+ - admittedly we have a long long way to go before all of those sub-groups are even close to being treated equitably. So with perspective on the past, I don't think the statement is really so "borderline ridiculous" - while acknowledging that things do still have a long way to go. |
