Others know this better than I, so please correct me if I am mistaken, but I think that Tom Burke, who plays the young lover, is more famous in the UK than Peter Sullivan, who plays the husband, which may have contributed to the casting decisions.

I also found it interesting that Rattigan and the director chose to have a husband who is good-looking, rich, has a title, and isn't a dastardly guy. She thinks he treats her like a possession, but we don't really have the opportunity to see whether that is addressable. It doesn't seem like it necessarily matters to her, because ultimately, he isn't what she is looking for.
