Maybe the term "show queens" doesn't mean that at all. Maybe it just means that SOME people -- usually but not always gay men -- self-identify as "show queens" and use the term affectionately, rather than in a derogatory way.
It's all about intent, isn't it? If someone used "show queen" in a demeaning, homophobic way, that would of course be offensive, but I think it's a completely different situation when people like Bill Rosenfield and his partner use the term to refer to themselves in a light-hearted, affectionate, positive way. |
