WHy did people think William Inge's dramas would make good musicals?

Along with SHEBA, there was CHERI (Bus Stop) and HOT SEPTEMBER (Picnic), and none of them ever made it to Broadway. Only DARK AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS was spared "musicalization." Why? His subtle poetic realism in Midwest settings hardly calls out for song and dance. Williams, Miller, and Hellman (except for the opera REGINA) were never put to music. What was Inge's allure to songwriters?
