| Not loving it so far. But I'm going to stick with it. I'm not that much of a fan of the play. Pushkin got through the same material in one tenth of the time (and in verse!). I actually prefer Peter Schaffer's far less grandiose brother Anthony. I do like Lucian Msamati as Salieri, particularly his gorgeous voice. I keep thinking of the British Commonweath in Africa and that's probably not particularly sensitive of me to contemporary UK culture to forefront that but I wonder what a director from a British-Tanzanian background would make of this story of Imperial Court ambition. So far, director Michael Longhurst's use of the Southbank Sinfonia as a kind of greek chorus is clunky and maladroit. As for the pared down sets and the stand-in for the delights of Austrian pastries with a box of Krispie Kreme, I predict that come the end of Covid the theater will be smothered with such a frou-frou of scenery, spectacle and décor that it will make one sick (perhaps in a good way). | |
