My memory is that the production is relatively sparse scenically, because the spectacle is in the human bodies, but with moments of elaborate, bravura design for the operas - including reconfiguring the stage through smart use of the Drum Revolve - which makes them feel gargantuan. The OP may not have reached that point in their watching.
Part of why I love this production is that it could only happen at the Olivier, and it uses the Olivier's idiosyncracies so well. There's nothing quite like seeing a show in the Olivier that has no chance of moving, and so can truly embrace what that stage does. It completely changes the nature of the event and makes for a unique theatrical language. Oh, here's hoping they still have money when all this is through. |
