| The recent uptick in violent crime hasn't changed the fact that crime rates are still at a historic low in New York, and I doubt that this uptick is happening in areas where your friends are likely to go in the first place. From what I've been able to glean from the news, we aren't seeing these shootings happening in tourist areas. Are the people you're talking to actually doing research, or just having a knee jerk, fearful reaction? And of course, it's important to note that violence happening while the nation is engulfed in a pandemic is not a great predictor of conditions once society has stabilized into a new normal. It's worrying, especially as it begs the question if city police can only be effective when given free reign to be an authoritarian quasi-military force, but it's far too soon to be talking about it depressing future tourism at a time when the pandemic is only worsening as the federal government denies that it exists. |
