I'm a hard-core fan of 'Soft Power'

I loved ''Soft Power'' onstage and caught it more than a few times. It was such a one-of-a-kind musical that turned East-West relations on its head. Its very premise, which riffed off ''The King and I,'' was so witty and wacky: A Chinese movie executive falls in love with Hillary Clinton (!). Each time I saw ''Soft Power,'' I was tickled by all of its satirical takes on America, China, politics and race, and adored David Henry Hwang and Jeanine Tesori's score. I'm so glad Conrad Ricamora, Alyse Alan Louis, Francis Jue and the rest of that incredible ensemble got to do a cast recording. I'm still moved by the show's closing choral number of ''Democracy''; it's such a stirring and soaring anthem to what America should be and could be again.
