| Well said. There are also many older tri-staters who still belong to Broadway Show Clubs - a Group Sales mechanism where they and their friends see 6-10 Broadway shows a year, at discounted prices. A friend's Dad was ill the year HAMILTON opened, and his wife had passed away recently, so we used his 10th row orchestra seats. The value printed on the face from the 'Club" was $110, way below box office price. The rising spiral of ticket prices has indeed priced a lot of people out of Broadway - especially younger audiences. I first came to Broadway to see shows (before moving here later) in 1960. The first show I saw on Broadway was FIORELLO, at the Broadhurst. The weeknight price range was $8.60-$4.05 (part of which was the NYC admissions tax) In todays $, inflation adjusted, that's $70-$35. Conservatively thats 1/3 of the price of a ticket today. Weekday matinee tickets were equivalent to $50-17.50. Tickets to plays were about 20% less. The bigger problem with ticket prices, is, of course, what has happened to production costs along the way. In 1959, FIORELLO cost $250,000 to produce ($2.2 million today) . With its cast of 52, FIORELLO would likely cost around $12-15 million to produce today. That's a 600% increase costs. Meanwhile as above, ticklet prices have only tripled in the same time. At least doubling the length of time it takes a musical recoup today. Hence premium tickets, and very few tickets ever at below the top prices. In 1984, a Broadway revival (which never happened) was being planned. The budget was $3.5 million - already in 1984 400% more (in adjusted dollars) than the production just 25 years earlier. |
