For sure the people pushing a "look how out of control NYC is" narrative are doing it for their own purposes.
But it probably is true that many potential tourists don't understand that NYC is a big place. They'll see "shootings in NYC" and not understand that something that happened in Flatlands or wherever might as well have happened in Utah for all the impact it has on the safety of places tourists would actually go.
